With just over a month to go, the 12th edition of the University Eights is fast approaching. This week, we'll make that wait more pleasant with interesting content across the race's social media, co-created this week by students and rowers from the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) in Prague. You can look forward to something a little different each day, including interviews with members of this year's team. To get started, we'll bring you a short overview of ČVUT's past racing achievements and preparation for this year’s race.

Let's start with the most explosive news. In 2013, the ČVUT crew defeated a celebrated crew from Cambridge University to become the only Czech crew to cross the line ahead of a Cambridge crew.

ČVUT has not missed a single year of the University Eight competition since the race began. Jiří Kopáč has been a mainstay of the ČVUT crew, rowing a total of 10 times (only pandemic restrictions kept him from competing in all 11 races) and playing a role in each of ČVUT's eight victories. Tereza Anderlová (neé Paroulková) has been the most frequent coxswain, leading the ČVUT team eight times, often seated alongside her brother, Jakub Paroulek.

Since 2019, ČVUT has also managed to field a women's crew, whose best finish to date is second place. The ČVUT women are still waiting for victory in the University Eights.

How is the ČVUT crew selected?

The ČVUT crew generally consists of students who started rowing before entering university and have often competed on behalf of the Czech Republic. The level of the competitors is thus very high for the Czech context. The final selection is made by agreement among the individual crew members.

There is currently no university club at ČVUT, as there are at other universities, which students would regularly attend. However, this will probably change from next autumn, when rowing will be added to the classes offered at the ČVUT gym.

Where does the ČVUT crew train?

The answer is similar to the previous one: ČVUT doesn't have a central boathouse, where crew members meet regularly to train.  So the crews use the facilities of Prague's rowing clubs, where they train together and unify their racing pace a few weeks before the University Eights.
